...Police gunned down Roni Levi on Bondi Beach in June 1997 after he suffered a mental breakdown and began brandishing a knife. Initially, many in the community felt the police had overreacted. The coroner referred the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who subsequently ruled out any criminal charges due to insufficient evidence. But Melinda Dundas (his wife) continued pursuing every legal avenue possible to have the case reopened. She achieved a breakthrough. The NSW Police Integrity Commission announced it would hold a fresh public inquiry into allegations that the two officers may have been affected by drugs or alcohol at the time of the fatal shooting. The commission will also explore allegations of corruption or misconduct in the initial police investigation...
